Krakow (Cracow, Polish: Kraków), the capital of Malopolska located on the Vistula River, is a special place on the map of Poland. This is where the heart of the country was beating through the centuries, were kings were crowned and buried in the crypt at Royal Castle Wawel. And when darkness fell over Poland during partitions, when the country was not on the map, it was just here, where the most precious historical artifacts and symbols have been kept. It was here where Poles were searching its former glory and consolation of the spirit.
Poland was the centre of Jewish culture thanks to a long period of statutory religious tolerance and Krakow’s district Kazimierz was the centre of Jewish life in for over 500 years, before it was systematically destroyed during World War II. In the communist era it became one of Kraków’s dodgiest districts while gradually falling into disrepair. Rediscovered in the 1990s, thanks to the fall of the regime and worldwide exposure through the lens of Steven Spielberg, Kazimierz has since been on the rebound. Situated 50 kilometres of Kraków Oświęcim is the site of one of history’s most horrific crimes, Auschwitz-Birkenau embodies tragedy, inhumanity and the survival of the will. Today the museum stands testament to the inconceivable atrocities of Second World War while paying tribute to the thousands of lives unjustly taken within. Situated in the Krakow area, the Wieliczka Salt Mine is one of Europe’s oldest functioning underground facilities. Started in the early Middle Ages, the mine attracts thousands of tourists each year. Visitors will be awestruck by the chapels, reliefs and freestanding sculptures carved from salt rock walls, in addition saline underground lakes and archaeological displays.
However, Krakow is not only a city of rich traditions and history; a city of a unique architecture and numerous museums, art galleries and theatres. It is also a place where you can spend your free time actively. Here you will have an opportunity to do almost every kind of sport.
